Friday Prayer (Jummah)
Jummah (Arabic: جمعة) is the congregational prayer that Muslims hold every Friday around noontime. Jummah is held every week on campus when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters in Rooms 148 and 149 in the Student Wellness Center on West Campus, starting at 1:00 PM.
Friday khutbahs (sermons) are led by a variety of individuals throughout the year, including Imam Abdulhafeez Waheed, students, and invited guest speakers - females are highly encouraged to write khutbahs and have them delivered by males. On special occasions (such as all-female prayers), Jummah may be held in different locations which will be announced in the weekly email and social media. Please contact our Weekly Activities Chair and read our protocol if interested in giving or writing a khutbah!
Directions to the Student Wellness Center:
Starting from the West Bus Stop and facing the Chapel, turn left at the first building on your left (West Union), and continue until the bridge to your right. Cross the bridge all the way to the Bryan Center - turn left - continue forward past the Bryan Center and the large glass building (Penn Pavilion), and you will reach the Wellness Center.
If you are unable to make Jummah on campus at 1:00 for any reason, there is also a 1:30 PM service held all year at the Interfaith Chapel in the Duke Medicine Pavilion. The Duke Medicine Pavilion Chapel is located at 10 Duke Medicine Drive, main level, between information desk and cafe. This service serves as an alternate to the one on West for those who work or study closer to the hospital.
Three prayer spaces are located on Duke's West Campus for those seeking a quiet place - a Muslim prayer room in the Bryan Center Greenhouse, a meditation space in Perkins Library (Room 211), and The Mosaic (an interfaith prayer and meditation space) in Keohane Dorm (Room 4B401).
Directions to the BC Prayer Room:
1. From the plaza entrance to the BC, proceed down the stairs in front of you to the middle level.
2. Go right, towards the UCAE office, and continue towards the doors at the end of the walkway.
3. Approximately 30-40 feet outside of these doors is a greenhouse-like structure. Enter here and proceed down the stairs.
4. Enter the door on the left. After hours, you will need to have your DukeCard to enter.
5. In this hallway, the Prayer Room will be the second door on your left.
